Bad Axe Throwing: Get Your Lumberjack On!
By: Emmanuel Green of T.R.A.P. Chicago
Axe Throwing – The popular Canadian sport has made its debut in America. Its just like darts, except you throw axes. Sounds crazy no? More like…crazy fun!
I know what you’re thinking; Were not in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. How much fun could throwing axes be? “Too much!” I would answer. Recently, I spent some time at Bad Axe Throwing in Chicago, the first facility in the United States to host Axe throwing.
Surprisingly Fun For Everyone
People of all sizes, cultures, and backgrounds have enjoyed tossing axes. It’s appealing, because this is something people usually have never done, and it gives you bragging rights.
None of your friends have called you and said “Hey, wanna go throw axes?”. You would question their sanity no doubt, however, once you’re there the only question you will have is “When can we do it again?”
If you’ve never thrown an axe, there is a slight learning curve to get over first.
Look and LISTEN
This almost goes without saying. When starting your axe chucking journey, you will need to listen to every single word your instructor is saying. No really. One slip up and you will be without a part of your body in no time. We are throwing axes after all. Don’t let the fear of dismemberment deter you though. The coaches are very knowledgeable and make you feel comfortable.
Our coach, Julian, has only been with the company for about 4 months, but you couldn’t tell at all. He made it look easy, and it really is once you get the hang of it.

You cannot afford the luxury of a short attention span with this one folks. Every detail needs to be absorbed by your brain. Do not be afraid to ask questions, and don’t be over-confident. Once you get the listening part down, it’s time to test what you’ve learned.
Channel Your Inner Lumberjack
Most city dwellers have never seen an actual lumberjack before, so there isn’t much inspiration to draw on. For this instance, I channeled the spirit of Paul Bunyan, because he’s the only one I know of.
Throwing an axe successfully requires the right mindset. If you are afraid of it, you won’t have a good time. Let go of your fears, breathe, and concentrate.
You ARE the Axe
A key element to throwing an axe is form. You must grip the belly of the axe handle with an aggressive “thumbs up”. This serves to guide the axe to it’s intended target and to keep it stable. When throwing, the axe does all the work. Let it do it’s job.
There are several ways to throw an axe. Two-handed. One Handed. Under-handed. The list goes on. You can even throw two axes at once. I’ve heard legends about 4 axes being thrown at once. How bad ass is that?

Let your Axes FLY!!!!
The first few tries may be a bit demoralizing. It took me just short of half-an hour to stick my first one. However after that, I was a regular axe throwing maniac! The feeling is incredible, like firing a gun. After I got the hang of it, I never wanted to put them down. Practice does make perfect. Remember what you’ve learned, and put those skills to the test.
This will surely become one of the hottest and unique things to do in Chicago, if it isn’t already. In my 33 years on this planet, I’ve never had a desire to throw an axe. Now, I want to throw axes in my back yard everyday. It’s just that awesome.
